Journalist in Washington DC seeks information.

I'm a journalist in WASH DC working on a story for Naval History magazine (USNI) about the USS Liberty incident of 1967. Information has developed lately that the event was monitored by one or more EC-121s, with, according to one account, on-board Hebrew linguists hearing the Israelis ID the ship as Liberty before or during the attacks. Other accounts contradict this.

I'm interested in any data or contact information on this issue pro or con, on-the-record or off. First-hand accounts are preferable, of course, but I welcome all responses. (If for example, you know of another group or wing involved in overflying the event).

I'd be especially grateful for a quick response.

Many thanks & 2003 Best, DW

I am the webmaster for the 6910th Security Group-50's.

I arrived in Germany on Feb. 12th 1953, was originally assigned to the 12th Radio Squadron at Landsberg am Lech. After 11 months there, I was reassigned to the 2nd RSM at Darmstadt, and 11 months later returned to Landsberg and the 6910th Security Group, rotating to the ZI Dec. 12, 1955.

There were no websites for these units during that time frame, so being retired with time on my hands, I volunteered to create websites for all three units. There is a website for the 2nd Rsm but it only covered the reunions over the past several years..I have links to that site on my site. If its alright with you I will create links to your website.

My websites are as follows.

Have seen comments from some fellow Baker Burds...only guys I've kept in touch with are Skip Averill and Clyde Reasner (remember the Reasner shuffle?) I have spoken with Sue Bowden who was Dan's wife - had a memorable Thanksgiving at their apartment way back then. Often wonder about some of the other guys; Randy Young, Art Kilmer, Cuz (from Hazelhurst, MS), Gary (Mouse) Burgstahler(?), Sammy Parker, Tony and Jan Atkinson, Ray Crase, Ed Hood, Backstabbin' TSft Walker, Keith Matowitz....I put those 292/207 skills to use working professionally in Morse as a coastal radiotelegraph operator for a few years and then 15 years as a Radio Electronics Officer in the Merchant Marines sailing mostly on oil tankers. Beached in 1995 and still working in electronics, though as a tech. Love to hear from anyone."

I was a ditty-bop. I have some faded memories of my time in Germany. I still have some pictures of an open ranks inspection in our blues in Darmstadt. I lived in Pfungstadt just down the street from a fellow Dawg named ???? Danny I think from West Virginia. Oh how he love to sing that John Denver song. I remember John Fowler from Mass., and Mike form Merced, Ca. One of my good friends was Lynn Holznagel and his wife Kathy. He was in DF. We made the move to Augsburg under the assumption we would be extended until our ETS. Unfortunately all of the single guys were extended and the married guys were asked to go to the exotic places like Viet Nam, Thailand and Korea. Col. Kelly arranged for the single guys to volunteer to "swap" assignments with the married guys. SSgt Danny Kerr was the personnel guy who screwed that up. I reenlisted for a follow on assignment to Elmendorf AFB and the 6981 Scty. Gr. My daughter Amy was born on December 13, 1972. She went to Germany in 1998 and found the house in Haunstetten where we were living and spent a couple of days with our old landlord. I would like to find out what happened to some of the boys. Where is Roger Levesque, and his buddy Jay ?, Russ Ricker and others. I would love to hear from any and all who may remember me and my wife Anita. I left active duty in 1977 and went to work for the Post Office delivering mail. I joined the Air National Guard in 1981 and I am still serving. I was lucky enough to make Chief this year. We live in Olathe, Kansas. Thanks for the great site."

When I was discharged and re-enlisted, my papers say [Station orInstallation at which effected]- Sembach Air Base, Germany. Our School or course states: Det. 1, Hq AFIT [AU] Syracuse University, Syracuse, New York, however we attended Cornell University in Ithaca, New York prior to going to Germany as Language Specialist as Translators according to discharge papers. I had hell attempting to elicit proper paperwork confirming I did in fact attend Cornell University and did so eventually with the aid of our Congressman here in Texas. The old ""'73 Fire Tale"" of course. Anyway, I would like to receive any responses from any buddies who remember the Erika Bar downtown in Hof, Germany, the perennial favorite hangout of the ""203's"" owned and operated by Jake and Erika. Sure brings back good memories. Also from anyone I attended Cornell U. in Ithaca, NY in 1956-1957 classes. We all hungout at the Club 113. Very good memories. Where do I find out if anyone has established reunions of any sort on the net? This too would be a great help in contacting some of these friends and former classmates. Roomates were Willie Beherens-NJ and Dave Heidenreich from Indiana. Dave had a new Grundig Tape player with tapes from Diana Ross and the Supremes - heard that tape a 1,000 times. Oh yeah, Jake was still driving the two story double decker bus out to the Asparagus Fields at the Ops center. At the end of the work shifts on break, we would leave from Ops site and go to Switzerland or Garmish or someplace to visit or go skiing. The first commander that was there when I arrived was Colonel Williamson (Col. Willy to some of the less reverent among us.) I was a Dog trick 203, Russian, and worked some German, having adopted the language after arrival. I was surplussed in 1964 (a personnel sgt who got in a box with me at Goodfellow arranged some payback...) and spent the last few months of the enlistment at the 497th RTS in Schierstein, living at Camp Pieri in the Wiesbaden area. After that, I took a discharge overseas and worked for a while at Stars & Stripes. The work was good, and I enjoyed it - and I enjoyed Germany, probably more than I should have. I'd be interestedto hear from anyone to whom my name is familiar. I have located a few of myfellows from that era - one ex-Hungarian off Baker Trick is a physician (DrMartin J. Maassen) and there are a few others whom I have found over the years some of whom ended up down the road from me at No Such Agency. It wasa good time to be in that part of the service, and there are days I wish Icould have stayed in. I'm now a computer weenie for the Baltimore Police Department - married to the same person for 32 years, three children, no(more) motorcycles. I was with the Security Police that worked the entry control point.  We had Kellas Penny (deceased now) Andy Anderson and a guy everybody called Fat Jack. I can't remember his last name right now.  He's deceased too.  Anyway we we're assigned to Able flight. Some of the guys I do remember are Denny Olson, John Atkins, John Donohue and Paul Henderson. I lived on the third floor last room on the end toward the motor pool in the building that housed the mail room and audio club. Thats the last room on the right.  Across the hall was the latrine.  Drove a dark blue Volvo and had a '71 BSA 650 Lightning motorcycle. Brought both of them home and wish I had them yet today.  I'm married with 2 kids and have been in the Motorcycle, Snowmobile, ATV business for 28 years here in Tomah, Wisconsin. I remember mid shifts when a lot of guys hung out at a table just past the com center to the left. Was always a good place to shoot the bull and kill time.  I remember too the ash detail of having to haul the barrels of ashes out to the antenna field and sending them to the wind. The more I think about it a lot of things come back.  Its been a long time. If anyone is interested in getting ahold of me they can do so at LEISURETIME@TOMAH.COM(mailto:LEISURETIME@TOMAH.COM) Well Skip if you would post this for me I'd appriciate it. We had to move into a brand new building from an old wooden place at Sembach. I was on Dog trick, and the new commander (Dorothy) had brought her dog a small cocker spaniel (female), and at that time we had lost our great guard dog, a German Shephard, and one of the APs was going to get a replacement. Well he came back with a small terrier mix, and guess what, he made friends with the Captain's dog and almost every trick we had to throw water on both of them. Those were the early days. In fact at Sembach we had trailers for a while they were nice to work in HOT! Hot!. We moved to Darmstadt and found a nice air conditioned building with all of the bells and whistles. I miss the guys Tex,Harry, Bob Cummings etc. We were the first ones in the new building and it was at the time that was most active. We had the Cuban Missile crisis and the Berlin Wall. The antenae field where we had our beer bust opened up and reveal a nice set of NIKES (not the ones your wear) and all of the dependents where given IBM tracking cards. I was on duty that day and I could not leave until I was relieved. In the morning coming to work the Army had all sorts of weapons out, all I had was my headsets!!!!! I have many stories to tell if you would like to hear them give me an e-mail I'm still working for DOD buying hardware for the men in the field but things have changed (Great stuff). I was first stationed with the 12th RSM at Landsberg am Lech, then to Det 2, 12th RSM at Kaufbeuren. I remember another detachment of the 12th RSM in Linz, Austria. Sometime in the summer of 1953 we moved to Sembach AB, still as Det 2, 12 RSM. Our operations site was near Landstuhl AB in the woods just off the autobahn and on the approaches to the runway at Landstuhl. Who can forget the noise from landings and takeoffs. Specially noisy were Vampire jets of the RAF who apparently used Landstuhl from time to time. You could not mistake a Vampire sillouette.

We later became the 85th RSM. I don't remember it ever being known as the 6985 RSM. A new site was constructed on the top of a hill just above the village of Grunstadt am Weinstrasse. By then we were the 6914th RSM.

Our primary radio intercept coverage was of the Russian 24th Air Army in East Germany.

At the time I was there in Germany, RSM's were also located in Darmstadt and Bremerhaven, Germany, Chicksands Priory, England, Kirknewton, Scotland, Wheelus AFB, Libya, Adak, Alaska. Also in Japan.

I departed Sembach in June of 1956 for home. Had a good time there but it was a long three years.

Regards,.Ed Robinson"

9/24/98, 11:21:39 pm. Keith Harris <keharris@kiva.net> Bedford, IN. "6910th, Nov 71 - Jun 74. I re-upped for a 4 year tour in Darmstadt, six months later they closed it and moved us to Augsburg. It was supposed to be the greatest thing since sliced bread. Two years later they closed it. I managed to get on the Mod Squad (Days and Swings only, Monday thru Friday, almost a day lady). Normally I was on Able flight. It's been too many years to remember names, but I remember jeeping in one of the first WAF to come to Augsburg. She was red haired and from Rhode Island I think. When we were sent to Chicksands the AF decided to split the 6950th into two sqadrons and they needed 702's bad. Luckily I had a secondary AFSC of 702 so I managed to get off shift work. Those of you who went to Chicksands from Augsburg may remember me. I sat just inside the orderly room door on the right. Those were the days, weren't they. Just wish we all had realized then what a deal we had. Judging by the responses on the Chicksands page the animosity between first termers and lifers seemed to deminish greatly during the 80's. I was in between, not really a lifer, but not a first termer. I was going go career, but when I got orders for the states it was a SAC base (Wurtsmith AFB, Michigan). Back on the weight program so I decided I didn't need that crap and hung it up. Be nice to see the level of response the Chicksands page has on this page. If anyone recolects me, give me a line and we'll swap war stories and lies." "ContactRequested"

Many at Keesler who had assignments there were diverted to Chicksands. I caught up with them eventually. I was single then. My maiden name is Bonney, and many of my friends knew me as "Tree." I was one of the first women in the unit, and that made for an interesting time. I had to grow up in a hurry. But I have fond memories, and I have vistited Augsburg since then. It's still a neat place."

Came from Viet Nam to Darmstadt, three months later moved to Augsburg. Four months later, moved to Crete with the old DF equipment that had been at Darmstadt. Take about PCS moves, three in seven months was enough!" "ContactRequested"

5/30/98, 1:15:39 am. Lenny Mingroni <lildago@idcomm.com> Parker, CO. "USAFSS 6910th, May 1973-June 1974. I was such a young 'pup' when I arrived in Augsburg in 1973. I was just out of Tech School at the ATC unit in Biloxi, Miss. Yep, I was a 207X1.
I was 'shift trash' working those 4-1-4-1-4-3 shifts! I was assigned to Baker Flight; aka Baker Burds. Our Flight Commander was Lt. Jim Sullivan (who eventually became Col. Jim Sullivan and I believe is now retired), our Mission Sup was Marv Sherrill (aka the 'Silver Fox'-for his silver head of hair, not to mention his smooth talking ability), my Aisle Supervisor was Keith Matowitz (sp), and I remember folks like Col. John Kelly; who used to every now and then 'buy the rounds' for the shift coming off going on 'break' at the Air Force 'Keller', which I can still remember paying about 20 cents for 'Greenies' (aka Heineken!). My roomate at Sheridan was a Cajun from Ruston, LA named Chesley Earl Poole. Some of the other Baker Flt people I remember well are: Kirk and Jenna Jonus, Mary Ann Redzich (now Failing), Warren 'Jake' Jacobsen, A.D. 'Buddy' Clark, Mike Kersjes, Bill Case, Bill Portney, Bobby Dean, Denny Melinger, Rick Ducote (who is a cousin of Dan Dierdorf of ABC Monday Night Football fame).
I remember playing flag football with Randy Sturtz (I believe he was on Able Flt) as our QB, Ken Pino was a running back, Bill Case was our coach.
It's strange, but to be part of a place for only 13 months (not to mention some 25 years ago!) and have so many memories does say how special Augsburg was. After the AF unit closed operations, I can say for the Baker Flt people some retired, rotated stateside, off to Turkey, off to Crete, off to England, off to Italy" "ContactRequested"

We occupied bldgs 151, 152 and our HQs was in maybe 156(?). I went back there last month with my daughters and the personnel there and the press releases indicate the U.S. military is leaving Augsburg. It was great while it lasted! In 74 I PCS'd to the 7RRFS at Ramasun Station, Thailand (6924th Scty Sq). Just visited that site on the web...interesting. Keep up the good work. Mike Wagar" "ContactRequested"

5/15/97, 9:37 am. Ken McKee <kenmckee@aol.com> Ken wrote the following in response to my question about the former commander of the 6910th: "...You are correct about Col. Kelly and his nine kids. His full name is John L. Kelly II so naturally his nickname among the troops was John Two. He of course is long retired and living in San Antonio. In your history of FSA, don't forget that it was not only a combining of three ASA field stations, but also the 6910th Security Group from Darmstadt and the Naval Security Group. I'm sorry to say that I can't remember where they came from. The 6913th came later. Of course all those "69" unit designators are long gone and what was once the United States Air Force Security Service is now called the Air Intelligence Agency. I guess that's progress. Sigh!!!..."
